Uganda will hold general elections in January 2026. President Yoweri Museveni has been in power since his National Resistance Movement took over in 1986 after years of political and security turmoil in Uganda, and his visionary leadership brought stability to the East African nation. But today, critics say civic space has shrunk and the NRM has shown an unwillingness to tolerate opposition to its rule. ​​​​​​
