Aaron Ramsdale saved three penalties in a dramatic shootout as Newcastle United defeated Bournemouth to reach the FA Cup fourth round.

The former Bournemouth goalkeeper came back to haunt his former side and denied Evanilson, Alex Jimenez and, finally, Bafode Diakite in a nail-biting shootout at St James' Park after the tie could not be settled in extra time.

Newcastle defender Malick Thiaw had put the hosts 7-6 up in sudden death after coolly dispatching his spot-kick.

So Diakite had to score to keep the visitors in the cup - but he saw his effort saved by Ramsdale to the sound of deafening cheers.

On an afternoon Newcastle supporters again paid tribute to club legend Kevin Keegan, who was diagnosed with cancer, it was rather fitting that this was another topsy-turvy game following the incredible 4-3 midweek victory against Leeds United.

Barnes opened the scoring in the second half of normal time with his 10th goal of the season after latching on to Nick Woltemade's through ball.

But spirited Bournemouth responded through Alex Scott, who tapped home at the back post, after substitute Evanilson flashed the ball across the face of goal.

David Brooks then put Bournemouth in front after letting fly with a sumptuous effort from 20 yards to send Andoni Iraola and his staff wild on the touchline.

There was still time for another twist, however, and Newcastle were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time when goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic took down Sandro Tonali inside the box.

Anthony Gordon stepped up from the spot and, though Petrovic guessed correctly, the Newcastle forward managed to drill the ball into the bottom left-hand corner to take the tie into extra time.

Barnes scored another late goal - in the 118th minute - following his dramatic midweek winner.

But this game was far from over and Bournemouth substitute Marcus Tavernier got in between Sven Botman and Thiaw to poke home in stoppage time and take the game to penalties.

Newcastle won the shootout, though, with the help of Ramsdale, as head coach Eddie Howe recorded just his second ever win against his former side.

"It was an FA Cup classic in the end," said Ramsdale. "I'll never forget one of my best friends scored past me in the game, David Brooks, so he won't let me forget. I just had to do my job.

"We're in the middle of January and in all the cups and in a better place in the league. Hopefully, we can stay on this momentum train and keep climbing."

Another day - and yet more chaos at St James'.

Leaky Newcastle have conceded six goals in just two games on home turf this week, yet Howe's side managed to get over the line on both occasions.

That will give the Newcastle head coach a little encouragement - even if this sapping tie was not exactly ideal preparation for the visit of Manchester City on Tuesday night.

Thiaw, Botman, Tonali, Barnes and Woltemade all played 120 minutes; Lewis Hall, Lewis Miley, Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Gordon had lengthy cameos from the bench; and Tino Livramento hobbled off with an injury.

But the hosts will be lifted by the crowd once again on Tuesday night as they contest the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.

Howe spoke this week about wanting his players "to enjoy playing here, to feel safe and able to express themselves".

Just as Newcastle supporters encouraged his side during the shootout - even singing Guimaraes' name after he missed - the boos were deafening by the time Bournemouth defender Diakite took his spot-kick.

The cheers were even louder when he missed.

The home crowd certainly savoured the manner of this victory as they bounced up and down to the strains of Freed From Desire at full-time.

Newcastle have now not lost at St James' since September, winning 11 of their past 13 home games in all competitions.

That gives them a chance against Manchester City.

This was the first glimpse of life without Antoine Semenyo for Bournemouth after the club's top scorer completed his £65m move to Manchester City on Friday.

Semenyo was undoubtedly Bournemouth's talisman, but this side showed they had plenty of firepower and spirit at St James' - even without him.

There were a series of moments where injury-hit Bournemouth, who have not won away since August, could have crumbled.

Not least after Newcastle scored to make it 1-0, levelled to make it 2-2 and went ahead again to make it 3-2.

But each time Bournemouth came roaring back.

That will give Iraola comfort even in defeat.

But Bournemouth could still do with some reinforcements this month after striker Enes Unal hobbled off on a rare start to join Justin Kluivert, Ben Gannon-Doak, Tyler Adams and Ryan Christie on the sidelines.

Newcastle host Manchester City in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final on Tuesday, 13 January (20:00 GMT) before a trip to Molineux to take on Wolves on Sunday, 18 January (14:00).

Bournemouth face Brighton at Amex Stadium on Monday, 19 January (20:00) before welcoming Liverpool to Vitality Stadium on Saturday, 24 January (17:30).
