In 2017, I defended my honors thesis, "Seeking Truth Through Investigative Memoir," which was presented to the Department of Journalism and the Clark Honors College, and passed with distinction. I presented a portion of my research during the 2017 UO Undergraduate Research Symposium.
In relation to my research on the intersection of journalism and memoir, I received the 2017 Humanities Undergraduate Research Fellowship as well as a grant from the Clark Honors College.

The print pages of magazines like Vogue and Vanity Fair once minted money for Conde Nast. Those days are gone. Artificial intelligence is transforming the way people seek and consume information, hurting web traffic to some publishers, and social-media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram have diverted audiences’ attention. The digital media business is harder. Conde Nast is turning to events like Vogue World and the Met Gala to make money. This week’s Hollywood-themed Vogue World generated north of $30 million in revenue for the company. Digital subscriptions are another priority. “We don’t expect advertising to be a growth engine for the business,” CEO Roger Lynch told me in an interview. Can a company that once set the cultural agenda remain relevant in this fast-changing media industry? And even then, has it found a viable business model? https://lnkd.in/egCMykdV

In my latest analysis for MLex, I look at the AI Act's messed up entry-into-application timeline, arguing that its staggered timeframe is more fiction than reality. While all eyes were on the rush to finalize the code of practice for general-purpose AI models, not many noticed that the EU's rules on GPAI will be toothless for one year due to a misalignment with when the related sanction regime (Art. 101) and investigative powers (Art. 88-89) will take effect in August 2026. Similarly, the application of the bans might have to rely on the national laws implementing the EU regulation until the enforcement chapter (Chapter IX) starts to apply in 2026. Ironically, after years of recurring criticism about the lack of enforcement of the GDPR, data protection authorities might step in to clean up at least part of the legislator's mess. https://lnkd.in/eF_G_jKa

25 years ago today, the Nasdaq dot-com bubble reached its zenith. There are great lessons for another (possible!) bubble, in AI, that may also be topppng out. A chief one is this: Bubbles can be good (or bad). Good ones organize people around a promising economic trend, driving investment that helps deliver a productivity boom. The dot-com collapse was epic and brutal, yet the hype probably undershot just how big a deal the internet turned out to be.
