  1. tweaks for level 2 optimizations 

    - Need to be able to determine whether a ** was the first thing in the
  pattern to match bash's symlink following behavior.
- do not ever end up with an empty pattern
- do not strip a dot preceeding a '**', or strip '..' in such a way as
  to make a '**' be the first thing in the pattern if it wasn't already.
- do not strip a leading dot unless it's to turn './.' into '.'
