Expeditions

By all accounts, this should have been a failure. Unlike yesterday's, this would have been my fault, too.

After yesterday's island expeditions, I slept for nine and a half hours. I awoke refreshed to find that Pinneberg became a snowy wonderland overnight. I grabbed breakfast and hopped on the train to Elmshorn. The train an hour earlier towards Klanxbüll and Sylt was fifty-five minutes late, so I took it and arrived slightly early in Klanxbüll. I grabbed a snack, a local Wegbier, and a lot of salted licorice (as one must do when near the Danish border) at the supermarket. I started walking south. The road was neither busy nor in great condition. Still, I passed two people on bikes and a mother and child on an e-scooter heading towards town on the two-and-a-half-kilometer walk south.

I was nervous. Why? When I was on the train, preparing to disembark, I pulled up Google Maps for the walking directions. When I opened the point in GM from Geohash Android, I saw that the point appeared to be in a building. Near the edge, but, per Google's digital building footprints, definitely in. Weeeeelllll, shoot. I usually check this type of thing thoroughly, but I researched yesterday's and today's points on my phone on a train with spotty cellular service. This was the eighth or later point I was checking, and I had probably just zoomed in a bit on the dot info, saw that it was by a road in a rural area and thought, "I can reach that."

Hence, the beer. Perhaps I sought a bit of liquid courage and/or wanted to feel some kinship with the locals, for I was going to attempt diplomacy. There were a few things in my favor. It was daytime. The house on the property was single-family, so I would probably come face-to-face with the inhabitants. It's easier to say no over an intercom. I know the word, "Moin." I rehearsed my spiel on the walk down and pulled out my Diplomatic Passport as I approached.

The driveway was empty. I knocked on the door of the house. The lights were off inside. A dog barked from inside. I knocked again. I found the doorbell. I rang. I waited. I rang again. I waited for a couple minutes before stepping away, sure that they were not home. I eyed up the side of the building. There was nothing preventing me from trying to reach the point from the outside. I would not touch or disturb anything. Worth a shot. I walked along the building, got within margin of error, screenshot, took a selfie, and left, all within 30 seconds and without harm or foul.

I walked back to town, got a little lunch from the supermarket, and caught the train south.
