Notability’s big new update brings AI features that make the powerful note-taking app even better. The app now takes and explains notes for you, and it automatically generates quizzes and flash cards that take some stress out of studying. Here are five ways to get even more done with Notability, whether you’re already a fan or new to the app.

1. Get a summary of (literally) everything
The new Smart Notes feature gives you a summary of everything in a note, whether it’s handwritten, an audio recording, or typed text. Whether you’re planning a vacation or pulling together research from different sources, it’s easy to get a quick recap. To try Smart Notes, Plus and Pro subscribers can tap the document button at the top right.
Don’t miss: You can quickly move the summary into its own note by tapping the copy button at the top right and pasting it into a note.
2. Chat about your notes
Have a question about info in one of your notes, like when an assignment is due? Just ask the app’s Chat feature. To bring up this AI chatbot, Pro subscribers can tap the Chat button at the bottom right of the Smart Notes screen.
Don’t miss: Glean quick insights from PDFs and other documents you didn’t create by opening them with Notability and asking the Chat feature to give you the main takeaways of the file.

3. Record audio
The new Live Transcripts feature starts generating a real-time transcript when you record audio, making lectures and meetings easier to follow in the moment (even the boring ones). When you finish recording, you’ll also get a summary of the transcript, organized with subheads and bullets. Live Transcripts are available for Plus and Pro subscribers.
Don’t miss: Changing the speed. You can listen back to recordings as slow as .7 speed—or as fast as 2x.

4. Create a pop quiz
The app can now create a multiple-choice quiz based on your notes. The app will automatically create a quiz in Smart Notes for any note with enough content. Stumped by a question? Tap the “Explain this” button at the bottom left to break down the correct answer. The Quiz feature is available for Plus and Pro subscribers.
Don’t miss: Don’t like quizzes? Tap the button on the top right to select “Show only Flashcards” to switch between questions and answers. Or choose “Show only Fill in the Blanks” to type in the right answer. You can also select Auto to switch things up.
5. Color your way to calm
Need to unwind from all of that studying and productivity? Try coloring! Choose from hundreds of whimsical line drawings in Notability’s Gallery, from flowers and landscapes to a dog sleeping in a four-poster bed (and looking cozy under a comforter). Search “coloring” in the Gallery’s search bar to get started.
Don’t miss: If you’d like some artistic assistance, search the Gallery for “color by number.”
